A practical taxonomy

An asset’s economic function, underlying claim, governance model, and custody arrangement drive its usefulness and risk.

Bitcoin & monetary assets

Bitcoin is a bearer-style digital asset with a fixed issuance schedule and an independently operated network. Exposure raises questions of volatility, custody, taxation, and long-term adoption.

Stablecoins & tokenized deposits

Fiat-referenced tokens aim to provide stable units for payments and settlement. Distinguish issuer-backed stablecoins, bank-issued deposit tokens, and algorithmic approaches; each has different redemption and counterparty risks.

Tokenized securities & real-world assets

Onchain representations of stocks, bonds, funds, private credit, or property may offer improved transfer and servicing workflows. The token’s legal rights, redemption path, intermediary structure, and transfer restrictions remain central.

Smart-contract platform assets

Tokens associated with blockchain networks may play roles in transaction fees, staking, security, or governance. Their economics and degree of decentralization vary widely.

DeFi assets & positions

Liquidity-pool tokens, lending receipts, collateral positions, and derivatives reflect interactions with protocols. Underlying exposure can include leverage, liquidations, oracle risk, and smart-contract dependencies.

NFTs, credentials & digital identity

Non-fungible tokens can represent unique items, permissions, membership, or credentials, though a token alone does not guarantee offchain identity, ownership, or enforceable rights.

Questions to ask before evaluating an asset

Focus on the relationship between the token, the real-world claim (if any), and the infrastructure supporting it.

Rights & redemption

What does the holder actually own or control? Who is obligated to redeem, and under what law or contract?

Infrastructure & dependencies

Which chain, bridge, custodian, oracle, administrator, or issuer must perform correctly for the asset to function?

Compliance & market access

How do applicable securities, commodities, payments, sanctions, consumer-protection, and tax requirements affect use and transfer?
